Way back in the early 1980’s, the first batch of Filipino Nurses were housed in Sozialmedizinisches Zentrum Ost ( SMZO ) Nursing Home or as had been referred in the German language, SMZOst Personal Wohnheim. This Nursing Home is located in Langobarden Street in the 22nd District at the eastern side of Vienna. Thus, it has been populary known amongst the Filipinos as Langobarden since the very start. It is one of the biggest Nursing Home in Vienna which has sheltered a large number of Filipina Nurses working in the different hospitals in the city but most medical personnel has been assigned at the nearby Donau Hospital in this district ( 22nd ). The SMZO Nursing Home has became an integral part and solid foundation of family life of all these Nurses in their early years in Vienna; life which had been accompanied by difficulties from language barriers, homesickness, longing for the loved ones and a mere struggle for survival and acceptance from their Austrian co- workers The possibility of getting their relatives to come over was the best solution to combat the culture shock and longing for home. This became the binding force that deepened the friendship and unity with each other.
As the years passed by the following batches of Filipino Nurses were then further housed in Langobarden Nursing Home making the place famous among the Filipino community . Filipino mass was also celebrated every Sunday evening in the Chapel by Filipino priests assigned here in Vienna
The Langobarden Filipino residents organized events such as tennis , basketball , picnics , chess tournaments and most of all, the jovial drinking sessions of the boys which bind them closer until now.
The Nurses were allowed only to stay in the nursing home for a maximum of 3 years until they can find a place to reside with their families . After 30 years of being apart from each other , the group came with an idea to organize a grand reunion to reminisce all those wonderful years in the Nursing Home. Thus, Langobarden & Friends came to life ! The group held its grand reunion on May 26, 2012 at the Marriott Hotel, Vienna.
Ambassador Lourdes Yparraguirre was the guest speaker during the event.
